Good afternoon. I am the Senior Paralegal at the San Diego City Attorney's Office, Criminal Division (the Office), working with Chief Deputy City Attorney Nicole Crosby. Today we are submitting the POST New Course Certification Training Needs Assessment (form 2-343) for Gun Violence Restraining Orders (GVRO)  to Dan Schmitt at POST. Mr. Schmitt recommended that we generate an informational email to the San Diego Training Managers Association, along with a brief course outline. He stated that you would send this out to see if your association would like to see this type of course taught. Our course outline is attached. Note the Outline PowerPoint version is currently (and continuously) being updated.

Please note that 3 presenters from the Office (Assistant City Attorney John Hemmerling, Chief Deputy City Attorney Nicole Crosby, and Supervising Deputy City Attorney Jeff Brooker) have conducted 18 free trainings for law enforcement throughout California since May 2018, many within San Diego, but without POST credit. A copy of the POST Certification Training Needs Assessment Justification Attachment is attached for more information, in addition to the most current Outline. Know that there is legislation pending (AB 165) which would require POST training on GVROs statewide. This would allow San Diego to get ahead of the curve.
