Subject: SDTMA Per Diem/Meal Reimbursement Amount Survey
I'm doing a survey of per diem reimbursement amounts for training. If you could answer the following questions, I would appreciate it.
1. Does your department reimburse employees for meal reimbursement while attending training? Any stipulations, i.e. out of county only? Only if POST reimbursed?
Yes, my Agency reimburse employees for meals while they are attending out of San Diego County Training. However, if they are within San Diego county it is up to the discretion of their immediate supervisor. For example they are attending training on their regular work schedule we do not reimburse for meals because it is considered like their regular day at work; just so happen they are doing training. Like a normal day where you either bring your lunch or decide to eat out for your lunch break. Just like your employer does not pay for your fuel to drive to work each day same concept. We do have civilian employees if their supervisor agree to pay for their lunch it would come out of that departments budget through petty cash and not out of the Training Unit budget.
2. Do you have a maximum amount per day, per meal, half day?
For out of San Diego County Training we give them a cash advance that would cover their meals at $40/ day, hotel, rental car, parking fees. The Port pays in full for airfare, and tuition up front.
3. Is it a department policy, city policy, etc?
It is a Board Policy for the entire organization.
4. Do they get a cash advance, or reimburse afterwards?
For out of San Diego County Training we give them a cash advance that would cover their meals at $40/ day, hotel, rental car, parking fees. The Port pays in full for airfare, and tuition up front.
I reconcile the officers expense when they return from their travel.
5. Are receipts required?
Yes, receipts are required for all expenses. Itemized receipts for expenses over $25 are submitted to Finance and I keep receipts less than $25.
Thank you.
