SANDAG's latest Criminal Justice (CJ) Bulletin, 2024 Adult Arrestee Drug Use in the San Diego Region<https://sandag.us13.list-manage.com/track/click?u=94a2f8a66c9b57349ad0202e1&id=9ee11570ef&e=58447b33f1>, presents findings from interviews with adults booked into local jails. As part of the Substance Use Monitoring (SUM) project, the report examines trends in substance use and drug market activity, as well as related factors that often intersect with substance use and justice system involvement, such as mental health challenges and housing instability. Among this year’s key findings: three in four respondents tested positive for at least one substance.

Additional takeaways include:

  1.  About one in two (49%) respondents tested positive for meth.
  2.  Nearly one in five (19%) reported having experienced a drug overdose. Among those, 44% identified fentanyl as the drug involved.
  3.  About one in three (34%) reported a diagnosed mental or psychiatric disorder. Nearly half of them had attempted suicide.
  4.  More than two in three (67%) reported a history of homelessness.
