Use-of-Force Review for Supervisors - 16 hours Analyzing police use-of-force is a critical aspect of law enforcement and has evolved significantly in recent years, influenced by societal expectations, legal standards, and technological advancements. Law enforcement supervisors are the first line of defense in the review process. As the initial reviewers, supervisors are instrumental in upholding the integrity of policing practices, fostering public trust, and safeguarding their agencies from legal risks. This course would focus on how to conduct a comprehensive review and analysis of use-of-force incidents. Students will work in depth applying California Penal Code section 835a, California Government Code sections 7286 and 7286.5, in consideration of agency policy and training, to various case studies and use-of-force reports. Students will also gain practical experience reviewing body-worn and other video footage in use-of-force cases. Upon completing this 16-hour training, supervisors and those tasked with reviewing force incidents will have the skills, knowledge, and confidence to make informed decisions that comply with the law and agency policy, reducing the risk of criminal culpability and civil liability. Please note: This course would be considered a supplemental course to use of force training currently in the POST Supervisory Course.
