Hello fellow training managers, please disseminate this email to your respective training managers.
Per POST Regulation 1070/1082, there are 7 Instructor Courses which require the Instructor Update Course. To provide the Instructor Update for any of these listed courses below, the instructor will need to have the instructor certification for that specific topic.
For example, in order to teach the Arrest and Control Instructor Update Course, the instructor certification (which they already have) will be required to teach the update. Once they teach the update, they will need to then attend the course as a student in order to receive the instructor update certification. Being an instructor for any of the courses, DOES NOT give you the update certification
This instructor update certification needs to be completed by January 2029. After January 2029, an instructor for any of the 7 listed principles listed below will need to have the Instructor Update course for each listed principle. For example, if you have an instructor who teaches more than one of the topics listed below, they will need to attend an Instructor Update course for each course they teach. It is possible to have an instructor who teaches 5 of the seven courses below and will need to attend 5 Instructor Update Courses as a student.
Here are the 7 Instructor Update courses and their corresponding specific course control number.
* 29440 - ARREST AND CONTROL INSTRUCTOR UPDATE (1070)
* 29442 - DEFENSIVE TACTICS INSTRUCTOR UPDATE (1070)
* 29444 - DRIVER AWARENESS INSTRUCTOR UPDATE (1070)
* 29446 - DRIVER TRAINING INSTRUCTOR UPDATE (1070)
* 29448 - FIREARMS INSTRUCTOR UPDATE (1070)
* 29450 - PHYSICAL TRAINING INSTRUCTOR UPDATE
* 29452 - USE OF FORCE INSTRUCTOR UPDATE (1070)
Per POST Regulation 1082, the required topics are listed under the regulation. After further discussion with POST, POST WILL NOT be providing a “SHELL” or template, however since the topics are listed in the regulation, you can create the course yourself following the minimum topics in the regulation.
Agencies are beginning to create and submit their courses into EDI for approval.
Use the CCN of the corresponding update course in EDI to find the shell.

If you look in OPENDATA, ARREST and CONTROL INSTRUCTOR UPDATE and FIREARMS INSTRUCTOR UPDATE are approved. You can download these outline and use them as yours (just change the headers) https://opendata.post.ca.gov/
I hope this helps…

Subject: Instructor question

Hey there – hope you had a wonderful Easter!! Quick question, what does an instructor need training-wise in order to teach an instructor course? For example, we are considering adding an Arrest & Control Instructor update course to our in-house POST certified courses. What classes would the instructor need to have completed in order to teach an instructor update? Obviously they would have already completed an Arrest & Control Instructor class, but is there any other required class such as AICC or something along those lines to teach instructors how to teach (train the trainer)?
Thanks for your help 😊
