SANDAG released its most recent publication from the juvenile component of the Substance Abuse Monitoring (SAM) program. A CJ Bulletin<https://sandag.us13.list-manage.com/track/click?u=94a2f8a66c9b57349ad0202e1&id=8ec9ae8c7e&e=b469a15074> from the juvenile SAMY interviews and a flash<https://sandag.us13.list-manage.com/track/click?u=94a2f8a66c9b57349ad0202e1&id=16e9dd10de&e=b469a15074> found that almost all (91%) of interviewed youth self reported trying at least one illicit substance. Other highlights from these reports include:

  1.  More than half (52%) of interviewed youth reported misuse of illegal prescription drugs, making it the most popular category next to the three gateway drugs: marijuana, alcohol and tobacco.
  2.  While the proportion of interviewed youth who reported ever smoking tobacco has dropped to a six-year low (57%), nearly nine in ten (89%) youth reported ever vaping.
  3.  More than half (53%) of female youth reported instances of being approached by someone offering to pimp or prostitute them.
  4.  Looking at the past five years, 2023 showed the highest share of interviewed youth that reported suicidal thoughts and suicide attempts. In the last three years alone, rates of youth who reported having suicidal thoughts rose from one in five (20%), to one in four (25%), to one in three (32%), respectively.
