SDTMA Basic Breaching for Patrol Course

Good Afternoon SDTMA,

The San Diego Sheriff's Department In-Service Training Unit is creating a POST approved Basic Breaching for Patrol course. With lessons learned from recent active shooter incidents (Las Vegas, Virginia Tech, Lakeside, Orlando) it has become apparent officers and deputies may need to manually breach their way into an area during a high-risk incident. Officers and deputies do not currently receive any form of training in breaching while in the Regional Academy and there is currently no breaching course offered locally.

The course would be 8-hours and run in conjunction with our 8-hour Building Search Course.  However, the Basic Breaching for Patrol Course will be offered as a stand-alone class should the second day of Building Search not be desired.

The course consists of discussion points, hands-on/practical skills, and scenario-based training. It will cover structural and door assessment, use of basic tools, techniques for exploiting weaknesses of a structure and alternate considerations for unconventional or difficult targets.

  *   Difficult targets and unconventional methods
