Subject: Fentanyl Message

I want to take this moment to talk about a growing concern here in San Diego County and across the nation: the dangerous and often deadly effects of fentanyl.

Recently, Deputy David Faiivae from the San Marcos Sheriff's Station was exposed to fentanyl while on patrol and nearly died of an overdose. If it wasn't for the quick-thinking of his Field Training Officer, Corporal Scott Crane, in administering Naloxone, Deputy Faiivae would not be with us today.

I want to thank David and Scott for their willingness and courage to share their experiences of what happened that day for the public safety video you are about to watch:

This video is a reminder of just how dangerous Fentanyl is. Just the tiniest amount of this drug can be absorbed through the body and lead to respiratory failure and even death.

I know the men and women who patrol our communities and work in our jails, work diligently and take every precaution when they encounter Fentanyl and other dangerous substances.

The San Diego County Sheriff's Department will always ensure you have all the resources needed, including access to Naloxone and personal protective equipment (PPE), to protect yourself from Fentanyl.

Let us learn from incidents like the one in this public safety video. Fentanyl can affect anyone at any given time. I want to thank you all for putting your safety first and looking out for those around you.

Stay safe out there.

Thank you,

Bill Gore, Sheriff
