Safe Policing for Safe Communities Certification – Executive Order 13929

On October 29, 2020, the US Department of Justice (USDOJ) announced the Standards for Certification related to President Trump’s June 2020 Executive Order 13929, Safe Policing for Safe Communities<https://www.whitehouse.gov/presidential-actions/executive-order-safe-policing-safe-communities/>. As part of these standards, any state, county, and local law enforcement agency seeking discretionary grant funding from the DOJ is required to obtain certification from their respective credentialing bodies, in this case POST, by January 31, 2021 indicating they meet the two qualification criteria set by the USDOJ:

  1. “Adherence to applicable laws: The applying agency maintains use of force policies that adhere to all applicable federal, state and local laws; and
  2. Prohibition of choke holds: The applying agency maintains use of force policies that prohibit the use of choke holds, except in situations where the use of deadly force is allowed by law.”
