Does this scenario sound familiar?

A family member calls the police about a mentally ill relative who is off their medicine and having a crisis. When the police arrive, the subject fails to comply with the officers commands. In response, the officers begin to shout orders and draw their weapons. The crisis escalates and the subject grabs a nearby object, a kitchen knife or a screwdriver. The officers discharge their weapons and the mentally ill subject dies.

As you know, police officers are becoming mental health first responders and are often inadequately trained for this task. Tragedies between the police and the mentally ill are occurring daily. One “bad incident” can cause devastation to families, police officers and the agency they represent.

To help fill this unmet need, Embassy Consulting Services, LLC has designed a class titled “Interacting Effectively with the Mentally Ill". Embassy has trained over five thousand law enforcement professionals with this popular class. This engaging four hour class is designed to keep you safe and to keep you and your agency out of the headlines.

Our next class will be held on Thursday, June 11, 2015 from 8:00 am to 12:00 noon, at the Carlsbad Police Department. The class will be facilitated by Josef Levy, a recently retired Commander from the Long Beach Police Department and Dr. Elijah Levy, a clinical psychologist with over 25 years of experience working with the mentally ill. The class will also have a guest speaker, a person living with a mental illness who will share his personal experiences about the challenges of living with a mental illness.
