The California Mental Health Services Authority (CalMHSA), Student Mental
Health Initiative (SMHI) has made a great impact on the California State
University (CSU) campuses. Over 117,813 student, faculty, and staff have
been reached through program activities and services that support suicide
prevention and mental health awareness.  We have trained over 5,791 staff,
faculty, and students in the following programs: Question, Persuade and
Response (QPR), Mental Health First Aid (MHFA), Applied Suicide
Intervention Skills Training (ASIST), and Kognito.



We are now moving forward with the Interactive Video Simulation Training
(IVST) for campus police/law enforcement. We are pleased to share that we
finally have an authorized vendor who will be working with the CSU to
create at least two (2) IVST systems; and we finalized a contract with
Santa Clara County who will be providing the CSU system with seven (7)
trainings at the following campuses: Monterey Bay, Sacramento, San Diego
and Office of the Chancellor.



A brief description of the training is as follow:



IVST involves officers interacting with videos that contain professional
actors portraying mentally ill people in crisis.  The officers demonstrate
their recognition and de-escalation skills while one of the instructors
controls the individual responses on the screen.  Through this training CSU
officers will gain the following skills:



•             Reduce injuries to both officers and consumers

•             Reduce the need for use of force by police officers

•             Increase access to services for people with mental illness
and their families

•             Reduce unnecessary and expensive incarcerations and
hospitalizations

•             Reduce the stigma associated with mental illness



This equipment can also be used for additional trainings besides the mental
health simulation training.
