Subject: FY 2013-2014 Training Schedule

Dear California law enforcement professional,

During the last 29 years we have conducted many thought provoking studies in the field of interview & interrogation that ultimately have made our training what it is today. As a result of one study, we have been advocating the collection of written statements as a part of our investigative procedure. The written statement makes it easier to execute a full and complete follow-up interview and can be used to identify the guilty, locate evidence and increase the solvability of cases. For example, we have found that statements from the innocent and guilty differ in several ways and there is a simple test that can be used to identify deceptive statements 9 out of 10 times. This has been corroborated in a study by Adams and Jarvis (FBI Academy) entitled, "Indicators of veracity and deception: an analysis of written statements made to police." The best part is that it requires no extra work on the part of the investigator and it is easy to obtain. To learn more about this and many more interviewing techniques and strategies, enroll in a class near you.

We are now taking reservations for the new school year. Many have asked us to give a longer lead time when announcing classes so we are asking our friends to help us get the word out. I am asking our friends in the 760 area code to please pass the word around to others you know who might like to attend our training.

Both of our 40-hour I&I classes include procedures to facilitate this evidence collection. Both classes are certified POST Plan 1 which means all costs are totally reimbursable to eligible agencies including back-fill overtime and both are ICI Universal Electives. See below for enrollment instructions.

Very truly yours,
Nick Flint, Program Director

Oct 7-11, 2013 in Santa Rosa Feb 24-28, 2014 in Stockton

Jan 13, 2013 in Santa Rosa June 23-27, 2014 in Nor Cal (TBA)

Cognitive Interviewing is the most effective way to obtain information from cooperative witnesses and victims. Developed by memory researchers in the mid-1980's it has consistently proven to deliver more testimonial information than conventional "police interviewing."

Statement Analysis is a new technology for obtaining information from suspects and uncooperative victims and witnesses. Using the techniques presented in this class, the investigator will be able to detect information that the subject intended to keep hidden from the investigator. By breaking the subject's linguistic code the investigator will be able to identify locations within the statement that are sensitive to the subject and areas where time and information has been removed from the story (which is the primary way people deceive). The investigator will also learn the BATI Indirect Interrogation Approach that can be used in a variety of sensitive situations. A by-product of the analysis process is to detect deception. Some say that it is better than the polygraph and can be used without the subject's knowledge. All you need to make it work is a proper statement.

Tuition: $596 per student (California law enforcement & US military) or $675 per student (private sector)
